Which range you need
In North America the toll-free codes 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 are functionally equivalent; 800 numbers simply carry more prestige and cost more. Elsewhere the equivalents are national ranges such as 0800 in the UK, and in some markets a shared-cost range sits alongside them where the caller pays a reduced rate. Pick by the market you serve, then by memorability.
- Vanity and 800 numbers cost a premium for recognition alone
- Shared-cost ranges are cheaper for you but not free for the caller
- Check the range is the one your customers recognise as free
Working out the true monthly cost
Take the monthly rental, add the inbound rate multiplied by your expected minutes, and only then compare offers. A cheaper rental with a higher per-minute rate loses as soon as call volume grows. Where a seller lists a minimum order or setup fee, add that to the first month.
- Estimate minutes from average call length times expected calls
- Ask whether billing increments are per second or per minute
- Confirm whether inbound from mobile networks is priced differently
Reachability and restrictions
Toll-free numbers are typically dialable only inside their own country, and calls from mobile networks or from abroad may be blocked or surcharged. Carriers also apply stricter rules to toll-free traffic than to geographic numbers, so campaign and automated use needs to be declared. The offer states reachable countries and any restrictions the upstream imposes.
Capacity for support and campaign lines
Toll-free lines usually front a queue, so channel count is what decides whether callers hear ringing or a busy tone at peak. Filter on channels, and tell the seller in the order chat what concurrency you expect — a seller who confirms it in writing is on the hook for it if a dispute follows.
Testing before escrow releases
After delivery, call the number from a landline and a mobile inside the target country, and from abroad if that matters. Confirm audio both ways, check how the CLI of your callers is presented, and place two calls at once to test the channel limit. Problems belong in the order page while the funds are still held.
